商务英语是指英语在特定的商务环境中的学习和应用,它和普通英语的不同是在于建立在职业或商务活动的基础上,涉及国际贸易,进出口业务,国际金融等多个领域。

一.商务英语函电的特点

商务英语函电不同于普通交流性手段,特点鲜明,遵循七原则,(即体贴,完整,准确,具体,简洁,清楚,礼貌),其目的是维护良好的业务关系,进行有效的交流和正常的商务往来。其核心是效率,经济性和简洁性为效率性的具体表现。二者根本在于高效经济和达意清晰,效率是目的,内容是载体,二者相辅相成,缺一不可。

(1) 文体特点

商务英语函电由于涉及进出口业务,且同银行,海关,运输,法律等专业知识有着密不可分的关系,可归类为专业文体或正式文体。

(2) 语言特点

商务英语函电其中的三个原则“准确,简洁,清楚”都是对语言方面的要求,“体贴,礼貌”则是针对角度和态度方面的要求。“完整”是对格式的要求,而“具体”对整封函电内容的整体要求,是要求避免大而无当的词语,内容不能偏离表达的中心,商务英语函电不仅涉及独特的专业背景,而且涉及实际商务工作技能,其语言特点可以归纳为两条:

a.语言的选择性很强.基于商务函电涉及面涵盖贸易,金融,海关,外汇,商检等领域,显示出多种行业特色。

b.语言连贯,逻辑性强。商务人员的思维具体,审慎,讲究语言表达到的分寸。具体表现在用词规范,语法结构严谨,句子排列一般固定有序。

二.商务英语函电的实践

商务英语函电的学习是为了将理论应用到实践中去, 因此采用多种形式的练习巩固函电学习是必不可少的,务必做到“熟能生巧,应用自如”。

(1) 巩固商务专业术语

由于商务英语函电属于正式文体,是国际贸易环节中的交流信息的重要手段,因此形成了一套固有的商务专业术语, 这些与之前所学习的基础英语词汇还是有一定的差别的。例如,(1)offer在基础英语中作为名词使用是“提供”的意思,而在商务英语中表示“要约”或“发盘”(“一方当事人向特定的`他人作出的以一定条件订立合同的意思,表示并标明一经对方承诺受该意思表示的约束。”),(2)order在基础英语作为动词使用,表示“命令,指示,”但在商务英语中表示“下订单,订购”。此外,在商务函电撰写中,还会用到一些缩略语,例如,FOB(贸易术语),S/C(Sales Confirmation销售确认书), L/C(Letter of Credit信用证),A/R(All Risks保险险别,一些险)等,这些缩略语涉及到商务交往中各方面的信息,也是从事外贸工作人员在实际操作中熟悉的。

(2)理解和翻译商务英语信函

在独立撰写出商务英语信函之前,要能够准确地理解和翻译各种信函。结合书本上的信函实例,以各种商务环节为基础,分析信函的语篇结构,归纳出常用的句型和表达方式帮助自己理解和应用,并且可以用提问的形式检验对信函的理解。之后,学会自己分析其他重要信函的结构,进行句子和信函的英汉互译练习,掌握商务信函的专业表达方式。

(3)撰写商务英语信函

书写出得体的商务英语信函,需要进行大量的反复的写作练习。自己可模仿书上函电例子独立撰写,或者写回复信函,还可以给出具体的商务交往的情景,根据所学习的内容独立地写出相应的商务英语函电。

(4)善于总结信函语篇结构

商务英语信函的种类较多,如询盘信函,还盘信函,支付信函,等等。虽然信函种类繁多,专业词汇和句式的使用更是不计其数,但是从写作角度来看,还是有一定规律的,一封商务信函的语篇结构大致分为以下三个部分:破题部分,承接部分和结尾部分。例如,在撰写询盘信函时,首先,在破题部分介绍获得对方产品的途径和本公司的详细信息。E.g. We saw your IBM-compatible PCs at the International Technology Exhibition held in Bonn in June. We are wholesale-dealers of electronic products in our country and interested in purchasing your computers.其次,在承接部分向对方询问产品的具体信息,包括产品目录单,价格单,报价,交易条款,折扣等。E.g. Would you please send us details of your computers including the functions and the necessary software? When quoting, please state terms of payment and discount you would allow to purchase not less than 500 sets.最后,在结尾部分可以告诉对方,如果我方对产品满意的话,就会购买产品。E.g. Should you computers be of good quality and competitive price, we should place a large order with you.这样,在撰写适合不同商务背景的信函时就不会感到无从下手,而是能按照相应的结构写出表达准确,立场合理的信函了。

三.商务英语函电的应用

英语函电是以文字为载体,贯穿于国际贸易各个环节(如建立贸易关系,询盘,报盘,还盘,订单,支付,包装,运输,保险,索赔与理赔,代理等各个业务环节),它不同于普通文体,涉及面广,专业性强,针对性强,因此,商务英语函电的应用应结合其不同的商务语境展开。

(1)词语方面

由于商务英语函电属于商务文体,词语的选择,翻译不同于一般文体,在使用时应结合其场合,领域与以考虑。

如:1.discharge一般意义为“卸货”port of discharge 卸货港,但在不同场合下其意义也不同,(1)Party B agrees that the expiration of the license shall not discharge Party B from its obligation.该句中的discharge意为“免除”,译为“甲方同意在许可证到期时并不免除乙方的义务”.(2)Routine duties of Jonint Venture Company are tobe discharged by the general manager appointed by the Board of Directors.该句中的discharge 意为“履行”,译为“董事会任命的总经理,负责履行合营公司的日常职权。”

另外,在商务函电中词的省略和重复现象较为常见。分别体现在贸易术语和重要文件中。

如:1.CIF是cost,insurance&freight(成本,保险,运费)的缩写。 FOB 是 free on board (货交承运人)的缩写

2.The packing and wrapping expenses should be borne by the buyer .包装费由买方负担。句中的“packing”和“wrapping”同义,意为“包装”,在原文中重复使用为确保词不被曲解。

3.This contract is made by and entered into by the buyer and seller 此合同由买卖双方签订。其中“made by”和“entered into”同义,意为“签订”,重复使用力显文体的正式。

(2)句子方面

商务英语函电的选句因其效率性,精辟性和表达性而彰显出独特风采,在实践时应注意“句以达意”.

1.语句凝干精炼,力求表达有效。语句凝干精炼,力求表达有效是指选词简明,语法正确,使用得体。如:We are in the position to offer you 50 metric tons of iron sheets.(我们能向贵方报50公吨的钢板).offer译为“报盘,开盘”,有商务语言的特点和精辟文风而不同于其文学意义。Our order is subject to your acceptance of our terms of payment by D/P.(我们的订单以贵方接受我方的付款交单条件为准)中“subject to”是“以......为条件”之意。

2.句子表达固定,为表达明确,商务英语函电在实践中已形成固定套语。(1)商务函电首段首句,常见套语有:We thank you for your letter of .We are in receipt of your letter 等。如Thank you for your letter of September 8th ,as reply,we state as follows.感谢你方9月8号的来信,兹回复如下。(2)商务函电结尾句,英语表达有固定方式,如In accordance with your request,we send you a copy of sample for your reference 按照贵方要求随函附寄样品一份供你方参考。

(3)请求对方做某事的常用句式有we would appreciate :It would be appreciated. ;如It would be highly appreciated if you could us your sample book 如蒙惠寄样品书则不胜感激。

3.在函电正式文体中,如合同,仲裁书等,语句结构以复合句为主,很少使用简单句,凸显文体的合法,正式,严肃。如Any controversy under this contract arising between the parties or for breach of or relation to this ciontract shall be determined by arbitration to be held in the City of New York pursant to arbitration law of the state of New York and under the rules of the American Arbitration Assocition .这是一条在国际贸易仲裁中常用的一个条款,在句中Any controversy后连用了五个介词短语,这五个介词短语都是用来修饰和限定controversy的,对于此种复杂句子,首先必须先理清语句成分及其意思,结合语境,联系上下文理解。

4.单复数不要搞乱,不然会好刺眼,看着不舒服。

例如: An authorized person must show that they have security clearance. 应改为 Authorized persons must show that they have security clearance.

5.动词和主语要呼应,

想想这两个句子的分别:

6.时态和语气不要转换太多。看商务英语已经是苦事,不要浪费人家的精力啊。

7.标点要准确。

例如: He did not make repairs, however, he continued to monitor the equipment. 应改为: He did not make repairs; however, he continued to monitor the equipment.

8.选词正确。像affect和effect,operative和operational等等就要弄清楚才好用啦。

9.拼字正确。有电脑拼字检查功能后,就更加不能偷懒。

10.大小写要注意。除非必要不要整个词都大写,除非要骂人。

例如: MUST change to OS immediately. 外国人就觉得不礼貌和喝令人一样。要强调的话,用底线,斜字,粗体就可以了。
